2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Feedback

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the requirement for a clearer vision.

Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Recruitment

The news mirrors a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a sharper vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our players.

The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most recognizable series in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to continue seeing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.

Background of the Incoming Head

The appointee currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 together with a early access event. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your group can secure victory? The decision is up to you."

Project Ethos has not yet received an confirmed debut schedule or supported systems, but players can anticipate more updates as production advances.
