EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
