Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
