Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
