Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
